Exactly eight months after Joe Setting was hired as the head rowing coach at Duquesne University, he rewrote the record books. The Dukes' third place finish at the Atlantic 10 Women's Rowing Championship was the highest finish the program had since joining the A-10 in 1996. The previous best was seventh in 1999, 2001 and 2005. The A-10 Championship marked the first time that Duquesne won more than one event. The Lightweight 4 won their first-ever A-10 Championship event while setting a course record. The Novice 4 won their event for the first time since 1999.
In addition to the success at the A-10 Championship, Setting's crew was one of six teams to race in the first ever lightweight 4+ event at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta. At the Dad Vails, the Novice 4 captured second place and the Lightweight 4 appeared in the finals, placing fourth.
Setting, who graduated from Duquesne in 2001, enters his second year at the helm of Duquesne's rowing program. In addition to his duties as head rowing coach, he also oversees the men's club program.
Before returning to the Bluff, Setting spent five years (2001-06) coaching the rowing programs at Pittsburgh's Fox Chapel High School serving as the boy's and girl's assistant coach beginning in the fall of 2001 and heading the girl's varsity program from 2003-06. During his tenure, the Foxes captured numerous medals including gold at the 2005 Head of the Ohio Regatta in the Varsity 8, Varsity 4 and Lightweight 8 boats. Fox Chapel reigned as the 2005 and 2006 Midwest Scholastic Team Points and Women's Points Trophy Champions, giving the Foxes the distinction of being the first high school to take back-to-back trophies in the 13-year history of the 12-state Midwest Scholastic Championships.
In the spring of 2006 at the Western PA Scholastic Rowing Sprints Championships, Fox Chapel captured the team championship trophy, women's Points Trophy and placed first in the Varsity 4. The Foxes won the Points Trophy in 2005 as well and took first in the Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 events.
Setting also guided his women's Lightweight 4 to 10th place and the women's Lightweight 8 to 12th at the 2006 US Rowing Youth National Championship. The Lightweight 8 finished eighth at the 2005 Youth Nationals.
Setting competed on Duquesne's men's club rowing team from 1998 to 2001. He graduated Cum Laude in 2001 with a dual degree in management information systems and communication studies. Professionally, he was a network administrator with the Webb Law Firm in downtown Pittsburgh.
The 28-year old Newtown, PA native holds a Level 3 US Rowing coaching certificate. He resides in Homestead.
