Dukes Break Five School Records in Day Three of A-10 Finals

Duquesne's women's swimming team broke five school records in six events Friday evening and tallied 132 team points to remain in third place after three days of the Atlantic 10 Championship.

The day three finals opened with freshman Elizabeth Berk placing 10th in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:37.81. Fellow freshman Lori Yeaman followed with a 13th place showing in 4:40.24.

Next was the 100-yard butterfly where freshman Kirstie Shumaker touched the pads second in a school-record time of 56.36. Junior Katrina Streiner placed ninth in 56.83.

Senior Melissa Johnson then grabbed a gold medal in the 200 free with an NCAA "B" Cut and University record time of 1:49.86.

The school records continued to fall in the 100 breaststroke as senior Katie McHugh finished ninth in 1:05.89. Fellow senior Mary Beth Gorinski wasn't far behind in 11th place in 1:06.88.

Senior Kyla Favret, who set a school record in the 100 backstroke in the morning preliminaries, improved on that time in the finals with a second place finish in 56.79. She was followed by freshmen Tara VanNatta in ninth place in 58.20 and Briana Mangis in 11th in 58.62.

The evening concluded with the 400 medley relay team of Favret, McHugh, Shumaker and senior Lauren Stephens finishing fifth in a school record time of 3:52.39.
 

 

The fourth and final day of action will begin at 10:30 Saturday morning.
